Alameda County Fair
UCCE Master Gardeners -- Rocking the Red, White & Blue!
The Alameda County Fair has challenged us to "Rock the Red, White & Blue!" this year. We think Master Gardeners will be up to the task with an exhibit featuring Drought Gardening advice, a United Nations International Year of Soils display, Kid's Garden Learning Activities, and 2 musicians who "rock the garden" : scarecrows Zelda Zucchini & Tommy Tomato!
Native Landscapes: Find out about native plants, already adapted to drier conditions. Which might be right for your home landscape?
Drought Tolerant Plants: Many types of plants have drought tolerant varieties which do better with less water. Find out about these and how to look for them.
Composting: Find out how compost not only adds nourishment & microbes to your soil that plants need-- but also helps aerate the soil and improve its water retention. Get information about home composting.
Mulching: Mulch, on top of both your planted beds and your walkways, helps cool the soil and slow water evaporation. Find out what mulch materials are best for the garden, how much mulch to use and where and how to apply it.
Wise Irrigation: Do you use sprinklers in your garden? Find out about drip irrigation systems-- a far more water-thrifty way to water-- and it’s better at putting the water right where your plants need it.
Lawn Conversion: Watering of lawns accounts for a lion’s share of the outdoor water use by California homeowners. Have you considered converting yours to a drought tolerant landscape rather than just letting it go brown due to state mandated water reductions? Lawn conversion rebates are available from many water utilities. Lawn sprinkler systems could be converted to water-wise drip irrigation at the same time.
Celebrating and Promoting Healthy Soils!
The United Nations has declared 2015 the International Year of Soils. Master Gardeners are happy to promote the UN slogan “Happy Soils for a Healthy Life!” At our exhibit you will see what it takes to build and maintain healthy soils for healthy plants in your home garden.
Gone Platinum-- Rock Stars of the Garden!
We’ll reveal some of the all time top gardening tips of Master Gardeners-- our best gardening practices that we’ve passed on to so many home gardeners that they’ve Gone Platinum! Get on the “Train” at our exhibit and you might encounter some tips on the platinum award winning level of “Black Eyed Peas” or “Red Hot Chili Peppers”. Or million seller gardening “Jewels” on the stratospheric level of “Katy Perry”, “Michael Jackson” or “Lady Gaga”!
Kids Day - Every Friday!
Bring the kids to see our Rockstar Scarecrows and enjoy special children’s activities from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Kids Days (each Friday of the fair). They can … make a sunflower seed ball to take home and plant … get up close to a garden friend at our ladybug habitat … or a garden pest at our snail habitat … and leave sporting a “rock star”, ladybug, or reptile temporary tattoo (with parent permission). Coloring book & stencil rubbing activities as well.
