School and Community Gardening

Welcome to the Alameda County Master Gardeners School Garden website. We have created this resource guide as an informational tool to assist teachers, administrators, parents, and others who want to install, rejuvenate, or maintain a garden at their local school as an educational experience for all students and their communities.

To start you off, we have put together a "Top Ten+1" list of resources we consider the most useful and informative for general school gardening needs. As a core reference, they cover just about every basic aspect of how to get your garden started, how to keep it thriving, and how to use it to enhance your curriculum and excite your students.

Following the "Top Ten+1" is a comprehensive menu of school gardening topics. Each category includes informational resources and links to other related sources. As you might expect, our Top Ten appear in a number of these categories. Other resources we consider particularly informative or useful are noted with a .

This guide is an ongoing project we will augment and revise as new resources and information come to our attention. So, be sure to check back regularly. As we add or change resource entries, they will be denoted with a . If you have any suggestions for additions or ways to make this website more helpful and accessible to school gardeners, please let us know by using the comment section at the end.

NOTE: While we consider these listings reliable gardening sources and have made every effort to determine that the contact information is accurate, Alameda County Master Gardeners do not endorse or recommend any resources other than those operating under the auspices of the University of California Cooperative Extension.

The categories of information are as follows (click any category name to go directly to that section):
